Direct Billing & Extended Health Benefits

You may have coverage for therapy if you have group health coverage individually or through your employer. Many benefit and insurance companies offer coverage for speech therapists, feeding therapists, speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists. Please check with your provider if you are unsure about your coverage as every plan is different. Often our therapists will be listed under "Allied Health Providers", "Paramedical Services", or "Extended Health Benefits". Coverage amounts and eligibility can vary greatly between plans, so we encourage you to check with your provider about your specific plan. Here is some good information to know about your policy: ​

• How much is covered for each session? What will my patient portion be? ​

• Do I have an additional personal health spending account that could also be used for therapy costs? 

• When does the benefits year end? When does my coverage amount reset? 

• Are travel fees covered? 

• When a child receives therapy, the claim is submitted under the child's name as the patient. However, a session might be eligible to be claimed under the parent's name if the parent receives parent coaching, consultation or training. This is one way we can maximize your coverage by submitting claims under both you and your child. Please ask your benefits company if you would be eligible as the patient if you had a parent training session.

Any out-of-pocket expenses, or amounts that you are not reimbursed for can be claimed as medical expenses for tax credits on your personal income tax return. Speech language pathologists and occupational therapists are recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency as medical practitioners. Our services are eligible for the medical expense tax credit.
